A genotype is the genetic makeup of a cannabis plant — the actual DNA inherited from its parents. Two plants can share a genotype (e.g., clones taken from the same mother) and yet express different phenotypes if grown in different environments. Genotype determines the range of possible expressions; phenotype is the specific expression that environment selects.
Example: Same genotype, different cure — that explains the flavor gap.
Etymology: From Greek 'genos' (race/kind) + 'typos' (type); coined alongside 'phenotype' in 1909.
